Stone is a foundational state of matter in our lives, its many forms the foundation of a planet which has been churning these curds for eons. Sloshing, surging, amalgamating, layering, spreading, subducted, consumed. Lithicality hopes to taste the rising batholith, feel the turning iron core deep below, hear the granite creak and touch deep time.

Alex Murdin is an environmental artist known for his collaborative, conceptual and activist public works across the UK over the past 20 years (ruralrecreation.org.uk). Lithicality is a recent personal project which explores a more aesthetic path to environmental empathy and action - walking, sensing and drawing stones, from the wild granite of the tors of Dartmoor to the feral liths briefly herded into circles, squares and lines.

Art and prints sold on this site support the Lithicality project.
