High Willhays is the pinnacle of Devon’s secret mountain range, mountains which have long disguised themselves as hills. At 621 metres, it conforms to the legal UK definition of a mountain which requires the summit to be at least 600 metres above sea level. Right at the centre of the ridge, a ring cairn consists of a 20m wide circle of loose stones incorporating an arc of the natural granite outcrop, now filled with black peaty water. It creates a raised circle that joins with the mountain granite on this highest point, creating a sense of the threads that tie humans, stone and sky together.
