Watern Tor is an ice-carved gothic masterpiece of whirlpool granite. With outlandish gaps, like a decayed set of teeth, it dominates the skyline above the equally gappy smile of the Scorhill stone circle, which sits in the valley below. One of the gaps is known as the Thirlstone, from the Middle English word thirl, meaning a hole or to pierce.
