“The sides of the tor fell steeply away above us, like slow-moving lava from a volcano. A tumbling pair of iridescent wood pigeons flew out of a large slit in the rocks above. We got higher and then reached what felt like the back of the rock, which was festooned with soft mosses and peppered with English Stonecrop, a type of sedum with large clumps of pink star-shaped flowers, fed by the water seeping from the granite’s pores. Accompanied by the trill of willow warblers, we turned a corner and came to the most extraordinary feature amid this pastoral glory: a vertiginous stone staircase up one side of the cliff, with elegant, curlicued, wrought-iron hand-rails.”
