“Many of the rocks were adorned with a dark, pustule-like lichen, covering them like an astrakhan coat. We see lichens all the time on Dartmoor but their seemingly infinite variety, minute detail and uncanny colour elude and confuse. We got out our Guide to Lichens of Heaths and Moors, from the Field Studies Council, and came to the conclusion it was lasallia pustulata or Blistered Navel Lichen, although we couldn’t be sure. We are, however, content to bask in the lichens’ weird radiance without having to name them.”
