The ancient Celtic tribe who inhabited Dartmoor and Devon were called the Dumnoni, a name thought to be derived from old Celtic ‘dubno’ which can be translated as the ‘deep world’; fitting for a land of plunging valleys and high moors. Leather Tor is a place where this deep world emerges into the here and now (“Leather” is probably derived from the Celtic word “ledr” which is slope or cliff).
